Katrin Ströbel lives and works in Marseille, Stuttgart, and Rabat.
Her drawing-based, site-specific, and installation works are grounded in a critical engagement with the social, cultural, and geopolitical structures that shape our everyday lives. In her multifaceted practice, she examines cultural codes and (visual) languages within the complex intersections of migration, colonialism, Eurocentrism, gender, and globalization. Ströbel deconstructs gender relations and stereotypical roles with analytical precision and subtle humor—especially in her drawings and collages, where she questions systems of representation. Her identity as an artist, professor, and mother inevitably intertwines with her artistic perspective on societal power structures.
Since 2021, the artist has been dedicated to a long-term research project exploring drawing as a subversive and emancipatory practice. Her interdisciplinary approach emerges from a profound artistic and theoretical inquiry: Katrin Ströbel studied visual arts and literature and holds a PhD in art history.
Katrin’s work has been exhibited at institutions internationally including MAMAC Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain Nice, MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo Rome, Kunstmuseum Siegen, SAVVY Contemporary Berlin, Ludwig Forum for International Art Aachen, The Elemental Palm Springs, La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, MACAAL Musée d’art contemporain africain Al Maaden Marrakech, Casablanca Biennale, Triangle – Astérides Marseille, and FRAC Lorraine Metz.
Her works are represented in numerous public and private collections, among them the Kunstsammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the State Collection of Baden-Württemberg, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Kunstmuseum Mülheim, FRAC Sud Marseille, FRAC Artothèque Nouvelle-Aquitaine Limoges and FRAC Lorraine Metz.
From 2013 to 2023, Katrin Ströbel was a professor at the Villa Arson, École nationale supérieure d’art in Nice. Since 2023, she teaches as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.
